WHO THIS IS FOR

Social workers, marriage and family therapists, professional counselors, and other clinicians who want to more confidently recognize, assess, and address religious trauma in their client work.

• Define religious trauma and understand how it is similar to — and different from — other traumatic events
• Explore the role of attachment theory within a religious setting
• Understand how spiritual bypassing can affect mental health
• Identify potential areas of counter-transference for clinicians, and practice interventions for noticing and addressing it within yourself

WHY THIS MATTERS

Religion is one of the most influential cultural systems in society. For many people, it's a source of support and meaning — but for others, religious beliefs and practices can cause real harm and trauma. Most clients don't come to therapy specifically to address religious trauma, yet its effects often surface during treatment. Because every therapist carries their own relationship to belief or non-belief, the potential for transference and counter-transference around religion runs high. This training will help clinicians identify traumatic beliefs and events in a religious context, assess for religious trauma, and competently support clients who have been harmed — while building self-awareness of their own reactions along the way.
